The sacrament of Confirmation impresses a character and by it the baptized, continuing on the path of Christian initiation, are enriched by the gift of the Holy Spirit and bound more perfectly to the Church; it strengthens them and obliges them more firmly to be witnesses to Christ by word and deed and to spread and defend the faith.
-Canon 87
Confirmation is typically received by students in St. Charles Borromeo School and in the St. Charles Borromeo Evening School of Religion during the spring of eighth grade. Instruction and preparation for reception of this sacrament takes place during the course of study and within special programs for parents, sponsors, and confirmands during the year.
For those who seek this sacrament at a later age, the normal means of preparation is through our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) program. Individual preparation may be provided in unique cases, but involvement in one of the parish programs is strongly encouraged. Catholics who have not yet received the sacrament of confirmation are to receive it before being admitted to marriage, unless there is a serious inconvenience (Canon 1065).
